For my topic this semester, I’m diving into the world of high fashion runways, the community surrounding it, and how people can actually use these beautiful collections to create their own personal style.

As I’ve previously mentioned, my connection to this world started with my mom and only grew once I started modeling myself. Growing up around this industry gave me an appreciation for clothing design, while modeling showed me the chaotic, real side to this world. But that’s honestly enough about me for now, I want to focus on the community around this topic, and why it’s so fun to learn about and be a part of.

The high fashion community is incredibly diverse. You have your experts who can literally identify a collection from before they were born just by looking at a sleeve, alongside creators who take absolutely wild runway concepts and making them wearable for everyday.

What I love most is how this community can operate both in person and online. On one hand, fashion thrives in places like photography, pop-ups, fashion weeks, and even local thrift markets where people show off their own finds. On the other hand, the online space is where things really reach a global scale.

Platforms like Vogue Runway allow anyone to check out collections the second they are on the models on stage. Meanwhile, websites like Who What Wear gives people guides on any type of aesthetic you may be looking for. You don’t need to live in NYC or LA to participate in the industry anymore, which makes the entire culture feel a lot more open and accessible to anyone regardless of where they live.

High fashion years ago used to feel like a clique reserved for very rich celebrities or designers. Today, the internet has allowed high fashion to become a massive creative space. Anyone sitting in their bedroom can take direct inspiration from an avant-garde runway show and put together their own version that captures the exact same vibe. The culture has changed from being exclusive to sharing ideas, where the fun part is developing your own taste and taking super complex concepts to make them work with things you already had in your closet.

Over the rest of the semester, I want to use this space to explore the runway world and help everyone to experiment with their own sense of style. I’m planning on covering it all: how to manage color schemes, proportions, layering, and accessorizing. I’ll explaining all this while occasionally pulling from my own modeling experiences and analyzing why vintage collections from the nineties still hold such a big space in current fashion trends. If you just absolutely can’t wait to get more information until my next post, check out this guide on Runway to Real Life Styling.
