Let’s Talk About It: Sustainable Runway

Let’s be real. We all love the magic of fashion week in general. Scrolling through TikTok to see the new collections, rating the best looks, and keeping up with the new trends is literally half the fun of being into style. But lately, luxury fashion’s sudden obsession with going green has felt a little awkward. It feels like every major designer is slapping eco-friendly labels on everything, which has a lot of people wondering: are these runway sustainability trends actually helping the planet, or is it just more of a PR stunt?

Two Sides of the Runway

If you spend any of your free time scrolling through fashion sites or checking out different style blog posts, you’ll 100% at some point come across people debating over this topic.

On one hand, some fashion lovers argue that high-end luxury brands are the only ones with enough money to fund serious changes in materials and productions. Think about things like lab-grown fabrics that smaller brands simply can’t afford to experiment with yet. As highlighted in a piece from Vogue Business, major luxury houses are actively incorporating recycled elements and materials directly into runway presentations as a step toward reducing waste.

On the flip side, skeptical critics point out the obvious contradiction: how can a multi billion dollar industry built on pushing out endless seasons and drops actually become more sustainable? According to industry findings outlined in the Global Fashion Agenda , despite all the flashy runway claims, the sheer scale of apparel production keeps going up. That’s why so many people feel like runway and fashion sustainability is mostly just for show.

Who is Impacted and Who Needs to Pay Attention?

This whole debate hits the community in a few different ways. It’s super frustrating for certain designers who are genuinely trying to do things ethically from the ground up, only to get bashed and completely overshadowed by massive luxury labels just doing the bare minimum for more attention.

Ultimately, style creators, shoppers, and everyday fashion enthusiasts are the ones who need to keep paying attention. We shouldn’t let a cute, aesthetic runway show distract us from holding big brands accountable for putting our planet first

What do you think? Are luxury designers actually capable of changing their ways, or is it all a hoax? LMK your thoughts, until next time!
